After a variety of careers in the UK, Robert found a creative endeavour for his retirement in ceramics and has challenged himself for more than 10 years. He has spent time with teachers including Cher Shackleton, Bernard Kerr at TAFE and Andrew Tremain.
He has developed into teaching and regularly takes classes at South of River Potters Karlup Studio and Andrew Tremain Ceramics.
Melville Open Studios has given him the chance to display an ever changing range of work for the past several years and he has regularly exhibited with South of the River Potters and at TAFE.
His love of form has been one of his key drivers, enjoying finessing seemingly simple shapes. The variety of techniques in pottery keeps him engaged, particularly Raku, as well as teaching and making larger vessels with coil and throwing.
Melville Open Studios is a community-based event where creatives, living and working within the City of Melville open up their studios and creative hubs to the public for a weekend. The following sections provise an overview of the years 2033 and 2024.
Robert Hawes is a ceramicist and loves turning earthenware, inspired by the apparent simplicity of Chinese and Japanese forms. He opened his studio, in 2024 with guest artist Vivien Budge. On display was his newest work inspired by the colours of the Swan River.
Throughout the weekend he demonstrated a variety of coiling and throwing techniques.
